How to Open a Child Proof Pill Container

Most prescription drugs are packaged in 'child-proof' containers, which require a certain amount of manual dexterity-- and strength in both right and left arms-- to get them open.

While this is certainly in the public interest to prevent children from accidental poisoning, it can be frustrating for adults who have suffered loss of dexterity or strength in one arm through injury, arthritis, etc.

This article will illustrate a way to open these containers when one arm has limited capability-- as with a fracture of the humerus or upper-arm-bone.

edit Steps

1.
1
Turn the container over on a flat surface, like a table.

Press the palm of your 'good' hand down on the base of the inverted container
3.
3
Rotate the container while keeping the lid motionless through friction. If you can, hold the lid motionless with your other hand.
4.
4
Stop when the container has rotated enough to dis-engage the lid, grab both lid and container in your 'good' hand, and turn both over. Now you should be able to lift the lid and open the pill container.
